Sous les pavés, la plage (“beneath the paving stones, the beach”). If you’ve ever been to Paris, you’ve enjoyed walking on paving stones, most likely quarried from the nearby forest of Fontainbleu. Those same stones have played a part in every revolution or social action in the city for hundreds of years, repurposed for barricades or defense against military and police. Whether animated by protestors or not, this situationist slogan speaks to a broader, more metaphorical possibility that liberation is right under our noses or just beneath our feet. A hidden potential for joy, spontaneity, and collective action is just beneath the surface of an oppressive society of authoritarianism and consumerism.
